Composed of three short stories, Les Cœurs purs, a collection published in 1927, evokes three destinies taking place in war-torn Ireland, Russia and France. According to Kessel, « instinctive hearts are pure without any moral notion intervening, pure in the manner of a wine, a stone or a poison, pure in their violence and integrity. »
