Cocteau urges Montherlant to join him at the Académie française

« Mon cher ami
Ne vous inquiétez pas de l’Académie – c’est un phantasme et si vous voulez vous rendre compte que rien ne change lisez le livre du duc de La Force “En marge de l’Académie” publié par Maurice Garçon.
La seule chose étrange c’est qu’on soit sous cette coupole qui refusait Chateaubriand Hugo Vigny Balzac et recevait des gens que ni vous ni moi ne connaissons et n’aurions voulu connaître.
Ils vous veulent et vous auront coûte que coûte. [Cocteau rajoute en vertical à la marge : « Ils commencent à se rendre compte »] Résignez-vous.

Henry de Montherlant was elected to the Académie française on March 24, 1960, without a competitor, to the seat of André Seigfried. Although required by protocol, he did not make any candidacy visits (a formality he refused to do). Agoraphobic, or pretending to be, he was only received at a reading committee meeting by the Duke of Lévis Mirepoix on June 20, 1963. Claude Levy-Strauss became Montherlant’s successor at the Académie in 1973, a year after the latter committed suicide.
