« Les plus grandes actions se sont accomplies dans le silence et dans la solitude
Henry Bernstein »
A French playwright of boulevard theatre, Bernstein achieved fame in 1906 with his drama Le Voleur. In 1911, he gave a controversial play at the Comédie-Française, Après moi, denounced as a “Jewish” work, and what is more, by a “Jewish deserter [from the army ten years earlier]”, by his detractors who judged that it should not have a place in the theater. Having become director of the Théâtre du Gymnase from 1926 to 1939, he created several of his most notable works there, such as Samson, La Rafale, La Galerie des glaces, Mélo, Le Bonheur, Le Messager, etc.
