Louis Lumière seems to have written this thought (intended for Colonel Henri Reine) in the very unstable context of the first half of 1936. Franco-German tensions were then at their height following the remilitarization of the Rhineland by the Wehrmacht (on Hitler’s orders) in March 1936, with the aim of reestablishing the sovereignty of the Reich.
