DEVAMBEZ, André (1867-1944)

Original drawing signed
N.p.n.d. [c. 1937], 1 p. in-4° on beige laid paper

Charming original drawing with minimalist style

A French painter and illustrator, Devambez learned his trade at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before joining the studio of painter Benjamin Constant. His rich output of drawings and paintings is known for its dizzying high-angle compositions, such as La Charge (now housed at the Musée d’Orsay), featuring tiny figures in urban or fantastical settings.

Dédicacé au colonel Henri Reine, le présent dessin, titré « L’aumône », représente une femme avec une coiffe traditionnelle, un panier d’osier au bras, donnant une pièce à un petit groupe de mendiants.

Provenance:
[Album amicorum] col. Henri Reine
