Charming musical quote of his masterpiece Louise, the first naturalist opera
An opera in four acts and five tableaux, Louise was premiered on February 2, 1900, at the Opéra-Comique as part of the Universal Exhibition. Considered scandalous for its depiction of female desire and rebellion against parental authority in a manner too crude for the time, Charpentier had previously encountered numerous rejections from opera directors. Charpentier’s masterpiece, Louise is, in addition to being written in prose, the first opera to adopt the philosophical and naturalist aesthetic style, in the spirit of Zola’s novels, whom the composer admired.
This score corresponds to the third scene of the first act.
