Just appointed to the Académie Goncourt, the author of La Muse au cabaret receives the news with a mix of derision and gratitude

« Mon cher ami, Excusez-moi si je n’ai pas immédiatement répondu à votre excellente lettre mais depuis cette maudite élection, si imprévue pour moi, je n’ai pas eu un moment de repos. J’ai là dans toutes mes poches des lettres de condoléance des télégrammes à quoi je m’efforce de répondre dans la mesure de mes moyens. Les amis me feront crédit. Laissez-moi être reçu officiellement par ces messieurs de l’académie Goncourt, avant de nous arranger ensemble. Il pourrait aussi bien se faire qu’ils revinssent sur leur décision, s’ils tiennent compte des vieux papiers que de bons camarades ont exhumé pour me nuire dans cette affaire.
Je vous avoue humblement que cette petite rente qui me serait en quelque sorte tombée du ciel, était pour moi la pâtée & la miche assurées & me permettait d’être moins assujettie à la besogne du journal.

Reputed to be largely indifferent to honorary distinctions, Raoul Ponchon nevertheless joined the Académie Goncourt in 1924, likely at the suggestion of those close to him, who were concerned with ensuring his livelihood through the pension associated with the position, at a time when he was no longer publishing in the press. He occupied seat number 7 until 1937, succeeding Émile Bergerat.
Considering himself merely a “humble daily rhymer,” unworthy in his own eyes of official editorial recognition, his poetry collection La Muse au cabaret was published in 1920 thanks to the efforts of publisher Eugène Fasquelle. The work (the only one published during his lifetime) appeared when Ponchon was 72 years old.
