The photograph is dated circa 1875. Louis-Napoléon appears in a medium-length portrait, with a sober and elegant pose, and a clear, determined gaze.
The credit reads:

Born at Paris, March 16th, 1856
Killed near Itelezi, Zululand, 1st June, 1879
Elliott & Fry was a Victorian photography studio founded in 1863 by Joseph John Elliott and Clarence Edmund Fry. For a century, their main activity consisted of taking and publishing photographs of the Victorian public as well as social, artistic, scientific, and political personalities. In the 1880s, the firm operated three studios and four large storage facilities for negatives, with a printing works at Barnet.
