Nice exile letter about Hernani’s revival

Ex imo corde [from the bottom of my heart]. Victor Hugo »

The revival of Hernani marked a turning point in Victor Hugo’s career, whose plays had been censored on all French stages since the establishment of the Second Empire. None of his works had been performed since Marion de Lorme in June 1852. However, by 1867, his relationship with the authorities seemed to improve. His announced return to the Théâtre-Français was reportedly even at the personal request of Empress Eugénie, on the eve of the Universal Exposition.
The premiere took place on June 20, 1867, followed by seventy more performances.
