Autograph aphorism signed « H. Bergson »
Paris, 15 Feb. 1929, 1/2 p. in-12° on the verso of a postcard showing the philosopher in bust by Henri Manuel
Tiny stains otherwise fine condition
A very nice aphorism of the philosopher, which seems unpublished
« On ne trouve le bonheur qu’à la condition de ne pas le chercher.
H. Bergson »
Bergson’s moral inspiration is consistent with his dating. At this time, the philosopher was focused on writing his work on ethics, The Two Sources of Morality and Religion.
This statement also seems to echo that of his contemporary Alain in his Propos sur le bonheur (LXXXVII, March 18, 1911): ‘As soon as a man seeks happiness, he is condemned not to find it,’ and later concludes that ‘happiness is a reward that comes to those who have not sought it.
