In 1868, a fire completely destroyed Sarah Bernhardt’s apartment, as well as all her belongings. However, she was able to buy an even larger residence, with two lounges and a large dining room, at 4 rue de Rome. There she maintained a highly theatrical lifestyle where she kept a saton-lined coffin in her room and slept or lay down there to study her roles.
