Released in theaters on March 7, 1990, Stan the Flasher is Gainsbourg’s . As early as 1988, he began outlining the project with his saxophonist, Stan Harrison, to whom he confided: “I have this idea for a film—it’s about a guy who wears a coat and , but he’s always shot from behind. At the end, he collapses, dead; his coat opens, and we see he has a tiny thing… I’m going to give him your name. The film will be called Stan the Flasher.” (Le Gainsbook, ed.
