Victor Hugo requires a service from the famous harpist Léon Gatayes before the performance of his historical drama Les Burgraves
« Envoyez-lui, mon cher camarade, au Théâtre-Français [la Comédie-Française], vers trois heures, le jour où on jouera Les Burgraves
Bien à vous, et toujours à vous
VH »
Les Burgraves is a historical drama by Victor Hugo first performed at the Comédie-Française on 7 March 1843. There followed 33 consecutive performances that year (which is the sign of a relative success when we know that plays that did not meet their audience could be removed from the poster overnight after a single performance).
Léon Gatayes (1805–1877) was a French harpist, composer and music critic. Among his pupils was Juliette Récamier.
