Proof copies for three of his speeches upon returning from exile
There are several variations in the present proofs with the versions published in Actes et Paroles – depuis l’exil, vol. III, published in 1876 by Albin Michel.
Introductory remarks for each of these speeches, which are absent from the present booklets, will be added to the 1876 work.
– Aux Allemands, dated September 9, 1870 (four days after Hugo’s return from exile), appears in Actes et Paroles III in chapter II, p. 51
– Aux Français, dated September 17, 1870, appears in Actes et Paroles III in chapter III, p. 59
– Aux Parisiens, dated October 2, 1870, appears in Actes et Paroles III in chapter IV, p. 65
Back in France on September 5, 1870, after a 19-year exile, Parisians gave the writer a triumphant welcome. He actively participated in the defence of the besieged city, as demonstrated by these pamphlets, with their powerful and magnificent texts.
Nice set.
