A striking prose poem draft, unpublished during the author’s lifetime

Formerly from the collection of Emma Bardac, Madame Claude Debussy

Prose poems were among Laforgue’s very first literary endeavors. Although dazzling in style, the poet eventually abandoned the form. In her thesis Jules Laforgue and Poetic Innovation (Clarendon Press Oxford – 1993, p. 438), Anne Holmes dates the writing of this prose poem draft to the year 1879, when Laforgue was working on his unfinished novel Un raté.
