The competition for the grand prize for musical composition was held on June 29, 1879. It was returned by the Académie des Beaux-Arts after the cantatas of the five competitors had been performed. A preliminary hearing of these scores had taken place the day before at the Conservatoire, in the presence of only the members of the jury: Messrs. Ambroise Thomas, Reber, Gounod, V. Massé, Reyer, Massenet, members of the Institute, and Messrs. C. Franck, Guiraud and Paladilhe, assistant jurors.
