Paulhan is presumably reacting to an article by his friend Maulnier published in the journal Cahiers de La Table Ronde. The latter had set the general editorial line of the publication from the postwar period until 1949. A prominent and influential anti-communist, Maulnier wrote several articles during that time analyzing the position of the writer and intellectual Sartre.
