Rare carte-de-visite of the sculptor, written in the third person
[François Pompon]
« très sensible à vos félicitations et à la jolie petite rosette dont il s’est déjà paré, avec ses meilleurs vœux ainsi que ceux de Fablet qui est toujours heureux d’avoir de vos nouvelles »
Trained by Aimé Millet and Pierre Louis Rouillard, Pompon joined Auguste Rodin’s studio in 1890, where he worked as a practitioner in the marble depot on rue de l’Université. He quickly gained the master’s trust and was entrusted with the management of the studio three years later. It was in this very studio that he met Camille Claudel. From 1905 onward, Pompon decisively chose to simplify the forms of his sculptures, creating a distinctive style that would go on to exert a major influence on many leading 20th-century artists. Pompon achieved late recognition when he presented his White Bear at the 1922 Salon d’Automne.
