Outraged by the abusive use of his name in an appeal published by L’Humanité, Romain Rolland addressed a vigorous protest to Francis Jourdain

« Cher Francis Jourdain,
Dans L’Humanité du jeudi 12 mai, page 3, je lis un ‘Appel aux amis de l’Union Soviétique – à tous les travailleurs pour la défense de l’U.R.S.S.‘
Cet appel, qui est signé de mon nom premier ‘Pour le Comité National des Amis de l’U.R.S.S.’ ne m’a pas été soumis, et je n’en ai connaissance que par le journal. Je proteste énergiquement contre cet abus, j’interdis qu’il se renouvelle. Votre appel n’était pas tellement urgent que vous ne puissiez vous consulter avec moi, avant de le publier. Si vous l’aviez fait, je vous aurais dit que j’en approuve la protestation contre la phrase scandaleuse de Paul Reynaud et l’appel à la défense de l’U.R.S.S. mais je n’aurais pas laissé passer de grotesques expressions, comme les premiers mots : ‘Dans le sang de ses victimes, l’impérialisme français… » qui compromettent gravement et, ce qui est pis, sottement la cause que nous défendons. Il est aberrant de laisser supposer que l’impérialisme français a fait assassiner Doumer. Et si quelqu’un le suppose, il ne doit, en aucun cas, prêter la supposition à d’autres.
Je ne puis croire que ce soit vous qui ayez pris la responsabilité de faire paraître cet Appel sans mon nom, sans me demander mon assentiment. Je vous prie de me dire qui l’a fait, et de lui transmettre une protestation sans ménagements.

A partial copy of this letter is found in The Journal of Romain Rolland, which specifies the name of the recipient. He also reproduces the text of the incriminated Appeal, published the day before in L’Humanité:
“Appeal of the Friends of the Soviet Union to all workers for the defense of the U.S.S.R.
In the blood of its victims, French imperialism seeks to create a sacred union: witness this phrase by Paul Reynaud, Minister of Justice, Vice-President of the Council, published in L’Intransigeant on May 5: ‘An immense sorrow grips all French people. They feel deeply that this mourning brings them closer together. On the eve of the war, the blood of Jaurès cemented the Sacred Union. May the blood of Paul Doumer have the same virtue…’
The present circumstances give their full meaning to the formula “Sacred Union” in the mouth of a French minister and open up the same tragic horizons before us as those which the world proletariat faced in 1914, and which it only discovered when it was too late, because of the betrayal of the Socialist Party. Workers! The crushing of the only Proletarian Fatherland—an act of crushing which the French government seeks to make you both the instrument and the unconscious victim – would leave the bourgeoisie every possibility of reducing you to slavery and would worsen your living conditions to the point of famine.
You will not allow this crime to be carried out! Rise up against your own imperialism, instigator of the intervention against the Soviet Union!

Son of the architect and art critic Frantz Jourdain, Francis Jourdain was himself a painter, renowned interior designer, and art critic, first an anarchist and later a communist militant. The newspaper L’Humanité recognized him as one of the first French decorators to produce inexpensive furniture specifically aimed at the working class.
