Elegant portrait of the poet in a three-quarter view
This famous portrait, taken by G. Aubès, shows the poet in a three-quarter shot. Dressed in a wing-collar shirt and a bow tie, Valéry appears captured in a candid moment, his gaze distant, both hands in the pockets of his three-button jacket.
Beneath the photographer’s signature, Paul Valéry added in his own hand:
« à Louis Artus
Son ami
Paul Valéry
Juin 1926 »
A French writer and critic, Louis Charles Artus (1870–1960) was a columnist for Le Gaulois, L’Intransigeant, and Le Petit Journal. He was also a close friend of Marcel Proust.
