Sainte-Beuve evokes Nodier and his Memories of the Revolution
“Monsieur,
SteBeuve”
Charles Nodier (1780-1844) is a French writer, novelist and academic. He is attributed a great importance in the birth of the Romantic movement in the 19th century. Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset and Saint-Beuve recognized his influence. He was a major participant in the 16th-century rediscovery of French poetry, bringing Ronsard back to “fashion”.
The Philadelphes were members of a secret democratic society, founded in France at the end of the 18th century and influential during the Napoleonic era in Switzerland and northern Italy.
