Cendrars participated in the Second World War as a war correspondent on the British side. Soon after, he retired to Aix-en-Provence to write a very free four-volume autobiography entitled L’homme foudroyé, La main coupée, Bourlinguer and Le Lotissement du ciel, a masterpiece that synthesized the experiences of an adventurous and extraordinary life and his poetic research.
