The iconic portrait of Berlioz by Pierre Petit

Trained under Disdéri, Pierre Petit set up his Paris studio on the rue Cadet as early as 1858 and made his name with his Galerie des hommes du jour (1859-1861), a series of portraits of contemporary public figures. His portrait of Berlioz remains among his most celebrated. Other poses from the same sitting are also known. The composer appears there in full Romantic guise, his face tilted and pensive, resting on his right hand, the other in his pocket.
