The father of modern piano technique appears with in bust, turned three-quarters.
Many medals and decoration adorn his cassock. Liszt retired to Rome in 1861 after joining the Franciscan Third Order in June 1857. In 1865 he received the tonsure and the four minor orders of the Catholic Church, giving him in France the title of abbot.
We know a slight variation of this portrait, taken during the same photographic session, where Liszt appears slightly more in profile.
