Louis.

Par le Roi

Laporte”

It is very likely that this is the future general, brother of Marshal Berthier. Indeed, Jean-Baptiste Berthier and his three sons Alexander, Caesar and Leopold had executed the maps of the king’s hunting areas, a topographical masterpiece that earned him brilliant awards.

Arnaud de La Porte (1737-1792) was Minister of the Navy in 1789, Steward of the Civil List, Minister of the House of King Louis XVI. For having been the distributor of funds to finance the king’s escape, he was arrested after the day of 10 August 1792 and accused of having destroyed compromising documents. He was tried by the Criminal Court on 17 August and guillotined on 23 August, less than two months after the document was signed. Louis XVI was, as everyone knows, guillotined five months later on January 21, 1793.

Signed documents by Louis XVI from the Tuileries in 1792 are extremely scarce.
