The Symbolist poet, always in search of new explorations both verbal and physical, had the habit of keeping numerous notebooks filled with ideas and scattered notes. Although no prose or poetry of his is known to exist in Esperanto—a language then carried by pacifist and rational ideals—one can discern here Louÿs’s intent to divert it toward an erotic and transgressive vocabulary.
