Affectionate letter from George Sand to her intimate friend Charles Duvernet

« Cher ami,
J’aurais déjà été te voir sans une petite indisposition qui m’a prise en arrivant [du 9 au 12 juin, Sand souffre de l’estomac. Le docteur Dachy a été appelé deux fois]. Il faut toujours payer un tribut au changement de régime et de climat. J’espère en être quitte avant que Berthe [fille de Charles Duvernet, dont George Sand est la marraine] ne retourne à Nevers, et embrasser ainsi toute ta nichée. J’ai beaucoup à te raconter de mes voyages et rencontres. J’ai vu [Sylvain] Bernardet [dont Sand avait reçu la visite le jour même] et je ferai de mon mieux pour m’arranger avec lui. Charles Duvernet (1807-1874) was a childhood friend of George Sand. Their friendship continued throughout their lives, until Charles’ death. They exchanged an abundant correspondence. They have in common an interest in literature and particularly in the theater – Charles set up a troupe of amateur actors at La Châtre; he wrote plays that were performed at the small theater of Nohant.
George Sand dedicated her novel Horace (1841) to him.
It was during a visit to Charles’ home at the Château du Coudray on July 30, 1830, that George Sand met Jules Sandeau, who would become her lover for a few months.
