Loyal in friendship, Nerval tries to offer the services of his friend, the actor Pierre Bocage, to Arsène Houssaye, then director of the Comédie Française

« Mon cher Bocage,
J’ai enfin mis la main sur Houssaye ; il m’a paru fort irrésolu. Je ne crois pas que sa lettre soit une défaite, mais il craint les autres. Il m’a demandé quels rôles vous pourriez jouer qui ne soient pas tenus. Je lui ai parlé du Tartuffe du Misanthrope du Père de famille, d’une foule d’autres, tenus il est vrai, mais où vous pouvez vous produire à votre tour, ainsi que des pièces nouvelles. Je n’ai pu obtenir une réponse précise mais il me semble que la cause n’est pas perdue si vous vous y prenez bien. Voyez-le chez lui, Je lui parlerai encore de tout ça et de la nécessité d’avoir le dernier des grands acteurs, dont la génération semble s’éteindre

Considered one of the great actors of the Romantic period, Pierre Bocage became director of the Théâtre de l’Odéon, where he staged Le Chariot d’enfant by Nerval and Joseph Méry in May 1850. A few weeks after the play’s premiere, Bocage was relieved of his duties as director for political reasons. Idle, the man who had once been a brilliant performer in Le Tartuffe and Le Misanthrope began wandering from theater to theater. Here we see that Nerval, loyal in friendship, offered Bocage’s services to Arsène Houssaye, who had been directing the Comédie-Française since 1849. Houssaye did not follow up on this kind gesture.
In his edition of the poet’s correspondence, Michel Brix notes that it was probably awkward for Nerval to mention Le Misanthrope here. During the 1832–1833 season, Bocage had made a few appearances on the Théâtre-Français stage, notably in Casimir Delavigne’s L’École des vieillards, in Le Misanthrope, and in Corneille’s Nicomède; these performances had been judged uneven by the regular audience.
