Loyal in friendship, Nerval tries to offer the services of his friend, the actor Pierre Bocage, to Arsène Houssaye, then director of the Comédie Française

« Mon cher Bocage,

Pierre Bocage (1799-1862) was one of the great actors of the Romantic period. He then became director of the Théâtre de l’Odéon, where he staged Le Chariot d’enfant by Nerval and Joseph Mery in May 1850. A few weeks after the play’s premiere, Bocage was relieved of his duties as director for political reasons. Idle, the man who was once a brilliant performer in Tartuffe and Le Misanthrope began to wander from theater to theater. Here we see that Nerval, faithful in friendship, offers Bocage’s services to Arsène Houssaye, who had directed the Comédie-Française (Théâtre-Français) since 1849. Houssaye, however, did not follow up on this kind intervention.
