Maurice Maeterlinck is a Belgian writer, a figure of symbolism, he remains today famous for his melodrama Pelléas et Mélisandre (1892), the summit of the symbolist theater set to music by Debussy in 1902.

In Lisbon, Maeterlinck sailed for the United States, where he landed on 12 July 1940. He was not to return to France until 1947.
