« Ma chère Eugénie. Je te remercie de ta lettre du 31 juillet. Je suis bien heureux de savoir que ton voyage te plaît, que Louis [leur fils le Prince Impérial] va bien et que vous êtes bien reçus. Tous les matins je sais par le Times ce que tu as fait la veille. Cela est très agréable.
Ici rien de nouveau […] Camden est bien triste, le temps redevient froid […]
Je serai bien content de te revoir ainsi que Louis, car votre absence laisse un grand vide et quoiqu’habitant sous le même toit nous nous voyons peu, il est toujours bien doux de sentir près de soit ceux que l’on aime.

Empress Eugenie and her only son, the Prince Imperial, were on a trip to Scotland in the summer of 1872. Eugenie was, through her mother, of Scottish ancestry. The latter, whose full name was María Manuela Kirkpatrick de Closeburn y de Grévignée, an aristocrat of Scottish and Belgian origin, was the daughter of the Scotsman William Kirkpatrick, who was appointed U.S. consul in Malaga, and the niece of Count Mathieu de Lesseps.
