“D’une petite fille massacrée” is written in memory of Jeannie Chancel, daughter of Jean and Mady Chancel, resistance fighters from Saint-Donat and friends of the Aragon couple. The day after a parachute drop of equipment on the night of June 14 to 15, 1944, supervised by Jean Chancel and in which Aragon and Elsa participated, the Germans organized a punitive operation in the village: they carried out looting and massacres. The thirteen-year-old girl, who is sick, cannot escape with most of the inhabitants. Staying with friends, she was raped and died on 24 August of meningitis.

This tragic existence finds an echo in each trissyllable that closes its quatrain of alexandrins, mimicking a death as premature as it is brutal.

This poem is one of six unpublished works included in the collection La Diane française. It reveals in filigree Rimbaud’s poem “Le Dormeur du val”; we do not ignore the admiration of the resistant for the Seer.
