« J’allais vous écrire, Madame, pour vous remercier, lorsque j’ai reçu votre lettre. Oui, pour vous remercier de votre doux et gracieux accueil et vous dire en même temps tout le plaisir que j’ai eu à vous revoir⁽¹⁾.
Venez vite habiter votre retraite : il ne me faudra que deux heures pour me rendre auprès de vous⁽²⁾. Vous voyez que j’avais raison. On se retrouve dans la vie ; et quand le cœur ne change point, qu’importe la fuite des années !
Je vous attends donc, Madame. Je meurs d‘envie d’être votre nouveau voisin, comme je suis déjà votre vieil ami.

[2] In addition to her residence in Lausanne, Mme de Cottens owned a property in Benins near Nyon, not far from Geneva.

A friend of Chateaubriand, Laure de Cottens had almost married her distant cousin Benjamin Constant. She lived in Lausanne and was the daughter of the Swiss woman of letters Constance Constant d’Hermenches, whose father had been a general in the service of the France and who was befriended by the Lameths, the Duchess of Biron, Madame de Genlis, or General de Montesquiou.
In his Mémoires d’outre-tombe, Chateaubriand briefly mentions Madame de Cottens, “an affectionate, spiritual and unfortunate woman.”
