Tender letter to his lover Jean Marais for whom he devotes an unfailing love, despite the vicissitudes of life and the chaos of the Second World War

Inutile de te décrire le réveil après ton départ. Tu te le représentes ! Mais je garde bon espoir en ton étoile et en le nôtre et je ne laisserai pas chômer la chance.
Ta petite maquette [pour les décors de Britannicus] me tient compagnie et Cola aboie devant. J’ai décidé de tenir le coup et je le tiendrai même si c’est dur. Mes yeux me brûlent encore. J’irai chez l’occultiste lundi. Pour les impôts c’est grave et l’homme que nous avons ici va s’arranger pour que cela ne me ruine pas. De toute manière c’est énorme. Mon Jeannot ce n’est rien à côté de ta tendresse et de notre bonheur de vivre l’un contre l’autre de près comme de loin. Je vais laisser passer cette semaine très lourde à cause du théâtre. Ensuite je m’organise afin d’aller te voir coute que coute. J’adore et je te bénis. ☆ »

Jean Marais was mobilized on the front in the early hours of the Second World War. In May 1940, Germany invaded the France, Cocteau took refuge in Perpignan. After the armistice of June 22, 1940, the regiment of Marais having vanished, the tandem Cocteau – Marais returned to Paris, under German occupation. Like Sacha Guitry and many others, Cocteau decided to return to the stage with the revival of Les Parents terribles, a play that was quickly banned because, according to the collaborationist newspaper Je suis partout, “Cocteau embodies the decadence that has shaken the France”.
Marais and Cocteau remained united until the latter’s death, in 1963.
