Long unpublished letter from the poet alluding to the visits of the police to verify the wearing of the yellow star on the occasion of the second census of Jews in the Loiret department

« Cher Raymond,
Refaire l’Histoire avec la graphologie et l’Astrologie – Y compris l’Histoire littéraire. S’adjoindre un type calé en histoire, un agrégé de bon poil – oui – voilà une œuvre si tu avais le temps. Procéder par morceaux : expliquer Jeanne d’Arc par le Capricorne puisqu’elle ne savait pas écrire. Je voudrais bien entendre ta conférence… Procéder à froid sans idée préconçue l’astrologie en servant les passions de l’astrologue est perdue. 
Ici visites quotidiennes à tel point qu’on a fait un rapport (délation) à la police. Mon protecteur parisien a du mal à me sortir de là. Je m’attends au pire – et j’attends le pire. Sans y croire à cause de ma confiance en mon protecteur et en Dieu. Aucune inquiétude profonde.
J’ai tant vendu de peinture que je suis obligé de m’y mettre pour faire du stock. Me revoici peintre.
C’est tout !

Il doit s’être introduit dans mon graphisme quelque signe de folie (aliénation mentale) ou maladie de l’œil. 

Peut-être seulement insuffisance biliaire.

It is difficult to know the identity of Max Jacob’s protector. Since the latter has never revealed any names, several of his friends can nevertheless be considered as “protectors” in the sense that they give Max Jacob crucial information because they are in strategic positions. In this case, Max Jacob was accused of “Jewish conspiracy” because he was entertaining a lot of people in the summer of 1942, and he opened up about it to Conrad Moricand, then private secretary to Georges Oltramare. Until Moricand’s resignation – in mid-1943 – it was in fact possible to consider Moricand as a “protector”.
Max Jacob was finally arrested on 24 February 1944 by three members of the Gestapo in Orléans. He died in the Drancy camp on 5 March.

Raymond Trillat was a reference graphologist for Max Jacob, whom he consulted in addition to his regular graphologist, Jean Tuset. It should be noted that with regard to Trillat’s handwriting analyses, the poet saw in them a contribution of astrology: “I do not believe that it is through textbooks that Trillat has arrived at a science in which he seems to me to be innovative… Rather, it is a gift of mediumship, but above all of observation and attention” (cf.
