Autograph letter signed « Valentine de Lamartine » to Victor de Laprade

Long and precious letter from Alphonse de Lamartine’s niece in gratitude for a book dedicated to his poetry by his friend Victor de Laprade

« Cher Monsieur et ami,

Born on March 17, 1821 in Saint-Amour, Valentine was one of six children born to Cécile de Cessiat, the sister of Alphonse de Lamartine. The latter, widowed very early, in 1827, gets closer to her brother who, deprived of children since the death of Julia, tries to fill the void of his house by welcoming his nieces. According to witnesses, Valentine is ravishing, “big black eyes, tall, elegant, slim waist, graceful gait, kind voice as much as smile,” according to Marie-Renée Morin. Remaining unmarried, Valentine serves as secretary to a fallen and aging Lamartine. On 31 Aug. 1867 Lamartine adopted her and arranged for her to join her name to that of Cessiat. Universal legatee, she devoted herself to the glory of the poet, she edited his correspondence. She died on May 16, 1894 at the castle of Saint-Point where she rests near the poet.

Victor de Laprade (1812–1883) was a French poet and man of letters. His poems are inspired by Chateaubriand and Lamartine. He edited La Poésie de Lamartine in 1872 with Didier & Cie.
