“Nous avons reçu, Monsieur, la lettre que vous nous avés fait l’honneur de nous écrire le 12 de ce mois en faveur de la D^elle Avouaud à qui vous désirés procurer une commission de débitant de Poudre dans la ville d’Aix. L’ordre que nous avons établi dans cette partie nous impose la loy de consulter le commissaire des poudres de marseille sur cette demande; aussi-tôt que sa réponse nous sera parvenue nous nous ferons un plaisir de vous la communiquer, et si elle est telle que nous avons lieu de la préserver, nous lui adresserons la commission que vous désirés et qui doit être délivrée par lui.
Nous avons l’honneur d’être avec un très parfait attachement, Monsieur, votre très humble et très obéissant serviteur.”

Through his links with Minister Turgot and with the academic world, Lavoisier helped found the management of powders and saltpeters in 1775, of which he became co-director. ember of the Academy of Sciences (assistant in 1768, holder in 1778), Lavoisier became a general farmer in 1778 and still held several administrative and political functions at the beginning of the Revolution. Associated with the devaluation that followed the transformation of the assignats into a currency of necessity and which would have benefited the emigrants, he was denounced to the revolutionary authorities. Penalized by Marat through his propaganda L’Ami du peuple, he was sentenced to death and guillotined on 8 May 1794.

Edme-Pierre Le Tors, co-signatory of this letter, died in 1788 in an explosion, during an experiment on chlorated powder conducted under the direction of Lavoisier and Berthollet.
