Remarkable letter from the Imperial Prince proposing to wash the honour of Joan of Peter following a slander

« Mademoiselle,
Un affreux malheur vient de vous frapper et la rumeur du triste drame dont je veux croire que vous avez été la victime est parvenu jusqu’à nous.
Il y a quelques jours je vous croyais enfin heureuse, je m’associais du fond du cœur au bonheur qui semblait vous promettre l’avenir mais par discrétion je gardais le silence.
Aujourd’hui vous êtes accablée sous le poids d’une calomnie injurieuse et je viens à vous faire de nouveau l’hommage d’un dévouement qui peut être utile
Vous êtes hélas presque seule au monde maintenant mademoiselle, mais je vous prie de vous souvenir qu’il est un homme qui vous a sincèrement aimé et qui serait fier de payer de son sang le prix de votre honneur

The imperial family was very close to the de Pierres family, and especially to Jane Thorne (lady of the Empress’s Palace) and her daughter Jeanne de Pierres.
Following the sudden death of Jane Thorne in 1873, Empress Eugenie and her son the Imperial Prince had developed a great affection for her daughter Jeanne, concerned about her well-being and marital status. It seems here that Jeanne was slandered by her future family-in-law and her marriage was cancelled. She eventually married Charles Olivier Jules Bellivier de Prin in 1891.
